What citizen science is
Citizen science is the participation of non-professionals in the systematic collection of data — species sightings, water samples, plastic categorisation, weather logs — that contributes to a wider dataset. Done well, it produces both real data and real learning.
Formats that work with students
Structured field observation of intertidal or mangrove species; water clarity and temperature measurement; waste category audits; bird and pollinator counts; sound and light observation. Each has clear protocols and reflection potential.
What to be honest about
Student-collected data has limits — collection method, sampling window and skill all affect quality. Frame the activity as contributing observations that are combined with expert data, not as replacing scientific study.
